What makes a good web site?

Customisation

Any photo or logo can be used in place of the one above, and the colours can be changed to suit your preference.

Fluid Design

It may look like a simple site, but this is an example of web design at it's best.

This is what's known as a "fluid" layout,  and it will look good on any size monitor. Many websites are a set width, producing a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the screen if you're using a tiny laptop and the page is too wide for the screen — this is a big no-no regards user-friendliness.

If you're not sure what we mean then take the Fluidity Test... first, make sure that your 'Favourites' Pane is showing. Now let your pointer hover over its border until you see a double-headed arrow; keeping the left mouse button down, drag the border over to the right as far as you can. Notice how content re-flows to accommodate the narrower space? This is how smaller monitors will render it (example "snapshot").

Accessibility

Another mark of a good designer is considering the needs of visually impaired web users.

Drag the Favourites border back to the left, or close it, and try this. With your left mouse button held down, scroll the wheel of your mouse towards you, to zoom in to the page. (If your mouse doesn't have a wheel, then go up to your toolbar and click on "View" - "Text Size" - and select a larger text size. Admire the way the text size increases, and the fluid flow.  You can zoom out again now, by scrolling the wheel in the other direction.
